While testing is in progress, compile your application dossier, including business registration documents, brand authorization (if applicable), labeling or marking artwork clearly mentioning the relevant IS standard, and—if the manufacturer is located outside India—the appointment of an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).

Under the CRS route, once the product successfully passes all tests, the test reports and supporting documents are submitted online through the BIS portal, along with the applicable fees. If approved, BIS issues a Registration Number (R-number), allowing the product to be manufactured, imported, or sold in India.

For products covered under the ISI Scheme, BIS conducts a factory inspection to verify manufacturing controls, in-house testing facilities, quality systems, and marking procedures. After the license is granted, periodic surveillance audits and testing are carried out to ensure continued compliance.

After certification, manufacturers must strictly follow BIS marking and packaging guidelines, maintain production and test records, and promptly inform BIS of any changes in product design, components, firmware, or suppliers. Establishing a renewal schedule and a defined process for adding new variants helps maintain uninterrupted BIS compliance across your product range.
