Peracetic acid (PAA) is gaining prominence as a highly effective disinfectant and sterilizing agent widely used across various industries including healthcare, food processing, water treatment, and agriculture. Known for its strong antimicrobial properties and environmentally friendly nature, PAA offers a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical disinfectants.

Chemically, peracetic acid is a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide, which produces highly reactive oxygen species capable of rapidly killing bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. Its strong oxidizing power disrupts the cell walls and essential enzymes of microorganisms, leading to quick and efficient disinfection.

One of the key advantages of peracetic acid is its broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity without leaving harmful residues. It breaks down into non-toxic byproducts—acetic acid (vinegar) and water—making it safer for both humans and the environment. This characteristic makes PAA ideal for disinfecting food contact surfaces, medical equipment, and water supplies where residue concerns are critical.

In the food industry, peracetic acid is widely used to sanitize processing equipment, storage tanks, and packaging materials, ensuring food safety and extending shelf life. Its rapid action and low toxicity reduce the need for rinsing, saving water and time in cleaning processes.

Water treatment plants utilize PAA for disinfection of wastewater and drinking water. It effectively controls biofilm and microbial contamination without forming harmful chlorinated byproducts like trihalomethanes, commonly associated with chlorine disinfection.

Additionally, peracetic acid is used in agriculture for soil treatment, seed disinfection, and controlling plant pathogens, promoting healthier crops and reducing chemical pesticide use.

While PAA is a potent disinfectant, it requires careful handling due to its corrosive and oxidative nature. Proper storage and application procedures, including dilution and ventilation, are essential to ensure safety.
