I had a tattoo concept bouncing around in my brain for about three years. Kept promising myself I'd get it done when the timing felt right, and when I finally made the appointment and actually drew it out properly, I just stared at it and realized… no way. It looks way too cartoony, like something a teenager would get after losing a bet. I must've matured somewhere between thinking it up and now. Still want to get tattooed though, definitely not giving up on that. Which styles are trending in LA these days? What should I be checking out?

LA's tattoo scene stands out from the rest of the US in a big way. Chicano tattooing dominates there - delicate black and grey shading, religious themes, rose designs, portrait work. That entire vibe originated in East LA and has shaped studios throughout the city for generations. Neo-traditional is also huge, building on classic American flash but adding more depth and complexity. Tons of people choose that direction when they want something striking that won't look outdated a decade from now.

Black and grey realism is something LA tattoo artists excel at, the precision and detail coming out of certain studios is genuinely mind-blowing. Traditional style also maintains a strong foothold there, rooted in the city's actual tattoo heritage instead of just chasing whatever's blowing up on social media at the moment. Doing some research before stepping into a shop pays off, there's a comprehensive guide on traditional tattoo for Los Angeles here: https://rinattattarin.com/blog/tpost/how-to-find-a-traditional-and-neotrad-style-tattoo-artist-in-los-angeles . Breaks down what to look for in artists and how the style evolved within the city itself.
