Peroxyacetic acid, also known as peracetic acid, is a powerful oxidizing agent widely used as a disinfectant and sterilizer across many industries. Its effectiveness against a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores, makes it an invaluable tool for sanitation in healthcare, food processing, and water treatment.

Chemically, peroxyacetic acid is formed by combining acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. This combination produces reactive oxygen species that quickly break down organic material and microbial cell walls, leading to rapid disinfection. One of its major benefits is that it decomposes into harmless byproducts—water, oxygen, and acetic acid—making it an environmentally friendly option compared to chlorine-based disinfectants.

In the food industry, peroxyacetic acid is extensively used for sanitizing equipment, surfaces, and even fresh produce. Its ability to disinfect without leaving toxic residues aligns with strict food safety standards and helps extend shelf life.
