Precision navigation technology is entering a new growth cycle as global defense spending, unmanned aerial vehicle deployment, and autonomous systems development converge to drive demand for high-accuracy inertial sensors. A newly released industry report from Kings Research finds that the global fiber optic gyroscope market, valued at USD 1,106.5 million in 2023, is projected to grow from USD 1,142.1 million in 2024 to USD 1,471.3 million by 2031, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 3.68% over the forecast period. The steady, defense-anchored trajectory illustrates how legacy precision-navigation technology continues to find new relevance as militaries and commercial operators expand their reliance on autonomous platforms.

Fiber optic gyroscopes, or FOGs, measure angular rotation rates by analyzing the interference of light traveling through a coil of optical fiber. Their high accuracy, reliability, and resistance to shock and vibration make them a preferred choice for stabilizing platforms and determining precise orientation in aircraft, satellites, submarines, and a growing fleet of autonomous vehicles. Unlike traditional mechanical gyroscopes, FOGs contain no moving parts, giving them a durability advantage in the demanding operating conditions typical of aerospace and defense applications.

Defense Exports and Military Spending Fuel Momentum

A significant driver behind the market's expansion is the surge in global defense exports and military modernization budgets. India's defense exports, for example, reached USD 1.9 billion in fiscal year 2023 and now extend to more than 85 countries, reflecting a broader global appetite for advanced navigation systems including FOGs. This trend is mirrored in rising military expenditure worldwide; according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, India's own defense spending climbed 4.2% to reach USD 83.6 billion in 2023, underscoring how nations are prioritizing investment in technologies that strengthen navigational precision and operational reliability.

The growth of unmanned aerial vehicles has proven especially significant for the sector. In the United States alone, the Federal Aviation Administration recorded 782,203 drone registrations in 2024, of which 383,302 were designated for commercial use. FOGs play a critical role in this ecosystem, providing the motion-sensing capability UAVs need to measure angular velocity and speed accurately, particularly in defense and intelligence applications where positional precision cannot be compromised.

Miniaturization Trend Expands Addressable Applications

One of the most consequential trends shaping the market is the ongoing push toward smaller, more cost-effective gyroscope designs. As manufacturers succeed in shrinking FOG components while lowering production costs, the technology is becoming viable for a wider range of applications beyond traditional aerospace and defense use cases, including consumer electronics, automotive systems, and industrial automation. This expansion into adjacent markets is expected to open new revenue streams even as core defense and aerospace demand continues to anchor the industry.

At the same time, FOG manufacturers are contending with intensifying competition from micro-electro-mechanical systems, or MEMS, gyroscopes, which offer smaller size and lower cost advantages that make them attractive for consumer electronics and automotive applications. In response, established FOG suppliers are investing heavily in innovation to preserve their edge in precision-critical use cases, forging strategic partnerships with system integrators to ensure their technology remains embedded across the full lifecycle of high-value navigation programs.

Aerospace Applications and IMUs Anchor Segment Leadership

By application, the aerospace and aviation segment led the market in 2023, generating USD 426.6 million in revenue. Precise navigation and stabilization requirements for aircraft, spacecraft, and UAVs continue to make FOGs indispensable in this domain, particularly as demand for autonomous and unmanned platforms grows alongside expectations for improved flight safety and mission success rates.

On the device side, inertial measurement units captured the largest share of the market at 41.23% in 2023. IMUs combine fiber optic gyroscopes with accelerometers to determine an object's directional orientation and position by tracking linear acceleration and angular velocity. Their central role in navigation systems where precision, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness all matter has cemented their position as the leading device category, a trend expected to continue as inertial navigation technologies keep advancing.

Looking at sensing axis configurations, the three-axis segment is expected to generate the highest revenue, reaching USD 655.6 million by 2031. Demand from aerospace, defense, marine navigation, and robotics applications, where reliable orientation data across all three axes is essential, continues to expand. The technology's growing role in autonomous vehicles, drones, and immersive virtual and augmented reality applications is further reinforcing this segment's long-term growth trajectory.

North America Dominates, Asia-Pacific Gains Momentum

North America accounted for the largest regional share in 2023, at approximately 37.56% of global revenue and a valuation of USD 415.6 million. This leadership position is closely tied to substantial U.S. defense spending; according to USA Spending data, the Department of Defense accounts for USD 779.60 billion of the federal government's USD 2.08 trillion total budget. FOGs play an essential role in military applications ranging from radar and electronic surveillance to GPS navigation and air traffic control, and continued investment in these capabilities is expected to sustain regional demand.

Asia-Pacific is projected to be the fastest-growing region, expanding at a CAGR of 4.65% and reaching an estimated USD 357.0 million by 2031. Growth in the region is being driven by rising defense expenditure in China, India, South Korea, and Japan, alongside an expanding commercial and military aerospace sector. Increasing investment in autonomous vehicles and smart transportation infrastructure, along with a growing emphasis on advanced naval and underwater navigation systems, is further strengthening the region's growth outlook.

Competitive Landscape and Recent Developments

The fiber optic gyroscope market remains fragmented, with companies competing through partnerships, mergers, acquisitions, and continuous product innovation. Key players include EMCORE Corporation, Honeywell International, KVH Industries, Safran, iXBlue, Northrop Grumman LITEF, Cielo Inertial Solutions, Fizoptika Malta, NEDAERO, and Optolink. Many of these companies are investing in research and development, new manufacturing facilities, and supply chain optimization to strengthen their competitive positioning.

A notable development occurred in August 2022, when EMCORE Corporation completed its acquisition of KVH Industries' fiber optic gyroscope and inertial navigation systems business, a deal that included all associated intellectual property, assets, and a 100,384-square-foot production facility in Tinley Park, Illinois. The acquisition significantly expanded EMCORE's navigation solutions portfolio, positioning the company to better serve growing aerospace, defense, and industrial demand. In parallel, EMCORE has advanced its Photonic Integrated Chip technology across its open-loop FOG product line, culminating in the launch of its TAC-450 series of inertial measurement units and gyroscopes.

Outlook

With defense budgets rising, autonomous systems proliferating, and miniaturization opening new commercial applications, the fiber optic gyroscope market is positioned for measured but durable growth through 2031. While competition from MEMS-based alternatives will continue to pressure cost-sensitive segments, the unmatched precision and reliability of FOG technology should keep it firmly embedded in the mission-critical navigation systems that modern aerospace, defense, and autonomous platforms depend on.
