Corrosion resistance is a make-or-break factor for HVAC coils, and copper outperforms aluminum in challenging environments. Copper forms a dense natural oxide film that defends against salt spray, industrial waste gas, and hard water scaling. Near chemical plants, copper-coil AC corrosion is just 1/5 that of aluminum.
Aluminum relies on a thin oxide layer for protection, which works in dry interiors but fails in corrosive settings. When in contact with copper, aluminum acts as an anode, accelerating galvanic corrosion.
