Which Is More Corrosion-Resistant: Copper or Aluminum Coils?

Corrosion resistance is a make-or-break factor for HVAC coils, and copper outperforms aluminum in challenging environments. Copper forms a dense natural oxide film that defends against salt spray, industrial waste gas, and hard water scaling. Near chemical plants, copper-coil AC corrosion is just 1/5 that of aluminum.

Aluminum relies on a thin oxide layer for protection, which works in dry interiors but fails in corrosive settings. When in contact with copper, aluminum acts as an anode, accelerating galvanic corrosion. Coastal or industrial users need to apply extra anti-corrosion coatings and perform 2-3 annual maintenance checks on aluminum coils to avoid leaks within 5 years.  Click here to know more.
