Montreal’s mix of French, English, and Québecois slang makes it an excellent place to test AI translation tools. I tried the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses expecting smooth, hands-free language support without needing to pull out my phone. While the idea sounds cutting-edge, the real-world results were underwhelming.

In everyday travel situations such as cafés, busy streets, and metro stations, the glasses struggled to perform consistently. Background noise disrupted voice recognition, translations lagged, and casual French was often misunderstood. Fast speech and strong regional accents led to frequent errors, while weak underground connectivity caused dropped or incomplete translations. At times, the glasses even generated translations when no one was speaking.

Compared to alternatives like Google Lens, Pixel Buds, or the ChatGPT mobile app, the Meta Ray-Bans felt slower and less accurate. Although the design is stylish and hands-free media capture is useful, the translation feature isn’t reliable enough for serious travel yet.
