See Also On A wild and nutty trade deadline day, the Yankees and Mets operated coolly and ultimately wisely. They both understood the need for relief and more relief in this new-fangled game where a six-inning outing is considered a virtual complete game. And both gathered as much bullpen help as a roster will almost allow, which is why they share top honors in our annual list of winners (and non-winners). The winners 1. Mets. Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers give the Mets one of the best set-up combos going at a time when their bullpen was starting to suck wind. Helsley brings more high-octane stuff to Frank Ntilikina Jersey a group with very big arms, and Rogers, with his from-the-ground delivery, provides a unique look that might be super effective in their sea of 100-mph hurlers. They never got close on Luis Robert Jr. for their center field upgrade but smartly pivoted to Cedric Mullins, a high-energy guy better than his numbers (both offensively and defensively). Its no biggie they pa sed on rotation insurance since they have Tylor Megill and Paul Blackburn coming back, and excellent prospects Jonah Tong, Nolan McLean and Brandon Sproat dont look far off. 2. Yankees. The Yankees brought in not one but two great closers in David Bednar and Camilo Doval, plus solid up-and-comer Jake Bird, shoring up a bullpen that was threatening to undo the season. I could get picky and emphasize the inability to land a second lefty to go with serviceable Tim Hill, but that would be unfair since lefties are nearly extinct in the game (Danny Coulombe is close to the only consistently effective one traded this week). The move to land defensive whiz Ryan McMahon to fill their gaping hole at third base already is paying off, and they filled out their bench with role players who pound lefties (Amed Rosario and Austin Slater). They sacrificed fine catching prospect Rafael Flores in the Bednar deal but they produce catchers like GM produces cars. Bonus points also for excising Oswald Peraza from the roster.
