How to Get BIS Certification

The first step in obtaining BIS Certification is to identify the correct certification scheme applicable to your product. Products in India generally fall under either the ISI Certification Scheme, which involves licensing, factory surveillance, and use of the ISI mark, or the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), primarily applicable to electronics and IT products. Once the scheme is confirmed, identify the relevant Indian Standard (IS) and carefully review its scope, clauses, exclusions, testing requirements, and labeling provisions.

After determining applicability, develop a structured compliance plan. This should include a detailed list of product models and variants, clause-wise mapping of standard requirements, and preparation of technical documentation such as product drawings, specifications, critical component lists, safety declarations, and quality management system (QMS) records. Early planning at this stage significantly reduces delays during testing and application review.

The next step is product testing at a BIS-recognized laboratory with proven experience in your product category. Coordinate with the lab to finalize sample quantities, testing timelines, and report formats as prescribed by BIS. While testing is underway, compile the application dossier, including business registrations, manufacturing details, brand authorization (if applicable), and labeling or marking artwork clearly referencing the applicable IS standard. Foreign manufacturers must also appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) to liaise with BIS on their behalf.

Under the CRS route, once testing is successfully completed, test reports and supporting documents are submitted online through the BIS portal. After fee payment and technical review, BIS issues a Registration Number (R-number), allowing the product to be legally manufactured, imported, or sold in India.

For products under the ISI Scheme, BIS conducts a factory inspection to assess production controls, in-house testing facilities, marking procedures, and quality assurance systems. Approval is followed by periodic surveillance audits and sample testing to ensure ongoing compliance.

Post-certification compliance is equally critical. Manufacturers must strictly follow BIS marking and packaging guidelines, maintain production and test records, and notify BIS of any changes in design, components, firmware, or suppliers. Establishing a renewal and surveillance calendar, along with a clear process for adding new variants, helps ensure uninterrupted compliance.
