Everyone enjoys eating, but in India food represents emotions, celebrations and the love between families. Unfortunately, there is an underlying sadness to the joy associated with food—the fact that after large celebrations such as weddings, parties and festivals, millions of people across India go to bed hungry each night.

The Global Hunger Index identifies a serious situation in India as millions of people continue to suffer from food deprivation despite having access to large quantities of food. Though that may be the case, you can take action to help change the prevalent conditions.

Reasons to Donate Food

Food waste is a big problem everywhere—in your home and in many places. When was the last time you went to a wedding or family function? Think about what happened to the leftover rice, curry, or bread. After you enjoyed your meal, most likely, it just got thrown away anyway. In both cases, your decision to donate will accomplish two things at once: stop food waste and feed a hungry person. Whether you are feeding a child who needs nutrition to succeed in school or an older adult with no one to take care of them; your donation can make a huge difference to someone.

Many Ways To Help

If you would like to do something good for humanity, one of the first things you need to do is identify how to help people. The next thing you need to do is determine where you will obtain those resources. In many cases there are very good ways to find resources through NGO to donate food in India. Some of these organizations will take monetary donations to provide meals; other organizations use volunteers to come to your house and collect the food that you have left over from your recent events.

Below are some examples of ways these types of organizations work.

1.  Mid-Day Meal Programs—Organizations like Akshaya Patra provide food to school children. They do this by providing hot meals to children who attend government schools; these meals help these children to have the energy to attend school consistently, thereby encouraging their educational development.

2.  Surplus Food Recovery—Organizations like Feeding India (by Zomato) and The Robin Hood Army are great if you have food that you no longer want. An example of The Robin Hood Army will demonstrate this very well. The Robin Hood Army is a volunteer-based organization that picks up excess supplies of food from vendors and event planners (weddings, etc.) and using the volunteers, delivers the food directly to homeless people on the streets.

3.  Ration Donations—There will be circumstances where it is not feasible to prepare a meal, as such organizations like the Uday Foundation will accept dry rations (bags of rice, dal, flour, and oil) and provide them to families so they may prepare meals.

Donating Food Safely

Keep in mind these key points when donating food to an NGO in India:

1. Quality of food - Only donate food you would also eat. Don't give bad or stale foods away; provide people with fresh, safe, hygienic food.

2. Timeliness - If you have any leftover prepared food, call the NGO immediately as prepared food will spoil quickly due to the high temperatures in India.

3. Donating money - If you're unable to donate food, providing monetary contributions may be the most efficient way of helping as it allows the NGO to purchase what they need at wholesale pricing.

Conclusion

You don't need to be a billionaire to make a difference. Even a small donation can feed a family for a day. The next time you have a celebration, or simply feel the urge to do something good, look up an Ngo To Donate Food In India.
