Which Disinfection Methods Are Most Effective Against Biofilms in Water Loops?

One of the greatest threats to a pharmaceutical water treatment solution is the formation of biofilms. These colonies of bacteria can stick to the inner surfaces of pipes and tanks, becoming highly resistant to standard cleaning. To combat this, modern systems utilize a combination of thermal and chemical-free disinfection technologies.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a primary tool. At a wavelength of 254nm, UV light disrupts the DNA of microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing. Some systems also use UV at 185nm to effectively reduce Total Organic Carbon (TOC). In addition to UV, many pharmaceutical water treatment solutions incorporate Ozone (O3) generators. Ozone is a powerful oxidant that kills bacteria on contact; it can then be easily "destructed" by UV before the water reaches the point of use.

By integrating these technologies into a continuous circulation loop, manufacturers can maintain a "sanitized" state 24/7. This proactive approach to disinfection ensures that the distribution system remains free of pathogens, providing a reliable, sterile pharmaceutical water treatment solution for every production batch.
