White Sox Fall to Red Sox in 10 Innings, Set Unwanted Franchise Record With 0-8 Road Start

BOSTON — Shane Smith’s homecoming had its special moments, but the Chicago White Sox couldn’t close the deal Saturday at Fenway Park.

Triston Casas delivered a walk-off single off the Green Monster in the 10th inning, lifting the Boston Red Sox to a 4-3 victory and handing the White Sox their sixth straight loss. Chicago is now 0-8 on the road to start the season — the worst road start in franchise history.

“I hope the guys look at a game like this and see both the things we need to improve and the things we did well,” manager Will Venable said. “Every opportunity we have is a chance to get better — and also a reminder we can compete with anyone.”

A Hometown Start for Shane Smith

Smith, born in Danvers, Mass., admitted he soaked in the atmosphere Friday so he could focus fully on the mound Saturday. With family and friends in the crowd, the right-hander flashed a 98-mph fastball, allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk over 4 2/3 innings. He also hit three batters.

“I would have liked to have been a little sharper early on," Smith said. “But outside of the baseball, it’s really cool to be here.”

Smith kept Boston hitless into the fourth inning before Kristian Campbell broke through. Rafael Devers later blasted a three-run homer in the fifth to put the Red Sox up 3-0, chasing Smith from the game after two more batters.

“Another start where he was attacking guys with the fastball, the changeup was good, slider was good,” Venable said. “He just ran into some good at-bats late.”

Crochet Dominates Again

Former White Sox starter Garrett Crochet, now with Boston, shut down his old team for six innings, striking out seven and allowing four hits and two walks. It was Crochet’s second dominant start against Chicago in eight days after he took a no-hitter into the eighth inning on April 13.

Chase Meidroth, who broke up that no-hitter, again had success Saturday, recording three hits and driving in a run with a seventh-inning single. Luis Robert Jr. followed with a two-run homer to tie the game at 3-3 — a much-needed boost for the struggling center fielder.

“This one was important," Robert said through an interpreter. "You work hard and sometimes don't see results. Today was different. I felt good."

Extra-Inning Heartbreak

In the 10th, White Sox reliever Mike Vasil issued a pair of walks — one intentional — to load the bases before Casas delivered the game-winning hit, a high line drive that hit halfway up the Green Monster.

The loss dropped the White Sox to 4-16 overall, and they have now dropped 14 of their last 16 games.

Injury Woes Continue

Before Saturday’s game, the White Sox placed veteran lefty Martín Pérez on the 15-day injured list with left elbow inflammation, suffered during Friday’s 10-3 loss. Pérez had been one of Chicago’s few bright spots, posting a 3.15 ERA and a .197 opponents batting average over four starts.

“We knew it was at least going to be an IL situation,” Venable said. “We needed help.”

The Sox called up lefty Jared Shuster from Triple-A Charlotte. Shuster, a Massachusetts native himself, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings Saturday.

Despite another close finish, the White Sox remain winless away from Guaranteed Rate Field.

“We’ve been working," Robert said. "It’s just the results haven’t shown up yet."
