The structure of a self-aligning ball bearing consists of an inner ring, an outer ring with a spherical raceway, two rows of steel balls, and a cage that separates and guides the rolling elements. The defining feature is the spherical outer ring raceway, which allows the inner ring and balls to rotate freely even when the shaft is slightly misaligned relative to the housing. This self-aligning capability reduces stress on the bearing and prevents premature wear.

One of the key advantages of these bearings is their ability to accommodate angular misalignment. This makes them ideal for machinery where shaft deflection, mounting errors, or thermal expansion may occur. By compensating for these deviations, self-aligning ball bearings help maintain smooth rotation and reduce vibration.

In terms of load capacity, self-aligning ball bearings are primarily designed to handle radial loads, along with light axial loads in both directions. While they do not support as heavy loads as some other bearing types, their ability to maintain performance under misalignment conditions makes them highly reliable in appropriate applications.

These bearings are typically manufactured from high-carbon chromium steel, ensuring excellent hardness, fatigue resistance, and long service life. For specialized environments, such as those involving moisture or chemicals, stainless steel variants are also available.

Self-aligning ball bearings are commonly used in agricultural machinery, conveyors, fans, pumps, and textile equipment, where alignment conditions are not always ideal. Their forgiving design helps reduce maintenance requirements and downtime.

Proper lubrication and sealing are essential for optimal performance. Adequate lubrication minimizes friction and wear, while seals protect against contaminants like dust and moisture.
