The Commanders wanted to land an upgrade at quarterback during the 2022 NFL offseason and didn't waste much time pursuing one. After Ru sell Wilson was traded from the Seahawks to the Broncos, Washington moved quickly from the Colts. It marked the second time in as many offseasons that Wentz had been traded, and it marked what will likely be one of his final chances to rekindle the succe s he enjoyed early in his career as a starter. Wentz and Washington seemed like a decent marriage. He has had his share of struggles since 2020 with turnovers and sacks, but he was an upgrade over the six-man tandem that the Commanders had used during Ron Rivera's first three years with the team. And if he could regain his form, Washington would be settled at quarterback for the first time in quite a while. As such, Washington was willing to pay a solid price for Wentz. It wasn't exorbitant, but . And depending on how the 2022 NFL season plays out, the cost of acquiring Wentz could increase. While he had his share of struggles with the Colts especially late in the 2021 season he was an upgrade over what Washington had at quarterback in the previous two seasons of Ron Rivera's tenure in Washington. The Commanders had started six different quarterbacks in that span, so Wentz provided them with some stability. He wasn't perfect, but for the price of two Day 2 picks in 2023 and a five-spot shift down in the 2022 NFL Draft, adding him was a worthwhile gamble. As for the Colts, they had grown frustrated with Wentz at the end of his tenure in Indianapolis and wanted to move on from him. They got a solid price in exchange for him, especially considering how the value of other mid-tier quarterbacks on the market dwindled following the Wentz deal. And the deal could get even better for Indianapolis depending on whether the conditions surrounding the 2023 third-round pick are met. However, the conditions attached to that pick could make it a second-rounder when it's all said and done. reported at the time of the Wentz trade that the Colts would receive a second-round selection from the Commanders instead of a third-rounder if Wentz plays at least 70 percent of Washington's offensive snaps in 2022. The Colts before acquiring Wentz in 2021. They were to pay the Eagles a first-round pick if Wentz played 75 percent of the Colts' offensive snaps or if he played 70 percent and led Indianapolis to the playoffs; the former situation played out, so the Eagles received the 16th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft as a result. The Colts fell victim to that deal structure last year, but the conditional pick could prove profitable for them this time. Washington is currently just 1-4 and if the season ended today, its second-round pick would be No. 35 overall. That would head to the Colts and add another early pick to their arsenal of draft capital. Through five weeks, Wentz is yet to mi s an offensive snap for Washington. As such, he is on pace to exceed that 70 percent threshold provided that he stays healthy. Of course, he will also need to stay on the field. That will require him to avoid a benching that would leave Colts fans disappointed. NFL POWER RANKINGS: The Commanders haven't indicated that they are going to bench Wentz this season, even if it means giving up a valuable draft a set to play him. Ron Rivera was asked if he was thinking about the po sibility after Wentz was sacked nine times in Washington's 24-8 lo s to the Eagles in Week 3. "No, I'm not," he said defiantly, per . Certainly, that makes sense. Wentz has his warts, as he has already been sacked 20 times this season and is second in the NFL with six interceptions. That said, he has also completed 62.9 percent of his pa ses for 1,390 yards and 10 touchdowns; and his pa ser rating of 86 ranks 17th in the NFL. So, Wentz hasn't been astarter, especially by Washington's standards. He just hasn't been able to lead his team to victory. Of course, that could be what prompts a change for the Commanders, who are 1-4 on the season. Sure, the team's struggles are hardly all Wentz's fault. Their offensive line has been woeful and the defense has had communication i sues that have rendered it beatable. But it's hard to fix all of those i sues in-season. The easiest adjustment a team can make to spark change is at quarterback. So, if Rivera and the Commanders' brain trust think the team needs that, they would have an incentive to pull Wentz and keep their high-second-round pick. It would also give them a chance to evaluate the potential of fifth-round rookie Sam Howell, who is currently the third-string quarterback behind backup Taylor Heinicke. There hasn't yet been any indication that the Commanders will do that. And while Rivera ahead of Week 6, he and communicated that he wasn't trying to throw him under the bus. So, it appears that Rivera and the Commanders are ready to stick with Wentz, much like the Colts did last year. But if they can't start winning soon, they could be incentivized to make a switch.
