2014 Sochi Olympics USA loses to Finland 5-0 misses on bronz
Only two teams will end the men's Olympic hockey tournament with wins. The United States and Finland are competing for that consolation prize and a bronze medal. The U.S., which lost to Canada in one semifinal, and the Finns, losers to Sweden in the other, are playing the second-to-last hockey game in Sochi on Saturday morning. Canada-Sweden, the final, is Sunday at 7:30 a.m. ET (NBC). FULL ANALYSIS: Back in net for Finland is Tuukka Rask, who mi sed the Sweden game because he was sick. Jonathan Quick, of course, is starting for the the United States. FINAL: FINLAND 5, USA 0. That was a disaster. Bronze for Finland, nothing for the United States. A three-goal period for the Finns capped a disinterested game by the Americans. Finland now has medals in four of the five NHL Olympics and more wins (20) than any country but Canada. . Or on the bench. Painful. Here are some quotes from the U.S.: Parise calls team too pa sive offensively in last two. Where did the goals go? "We played better teams" Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) More strong words from U.S. captain Zach Parise, who said his team was "too pa sive" offensively. "To leave on this note was pretty ugly." Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) Harry Giles III Jersey Max Pacioretty: 'I'm not proud at all right now. I don't think anyone is. We were playing for a medal and didn't show up.' Dejan Kovacevic (@Dejan_Kovacevic) Kane: "I feel fine. Physically fine, mentally fine. Yeah, its been a tough couple weeks, but at the same time, no excuses." Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) Another from USA's Patrick Kane: "I was here to play hockey and try to produce and didnt do that." Chris Kuc (@ChrisKuc) Ryan Suter: "Yeah, we did collapse." Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) Bylsma: We weren't able to get into this game. Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) SECOND PERIOD: FINLAND 2, USA 0. The U.S. came out flat. Simple enough. Teemu Selanne and Ju si Jokinen scored a little more than a minute into the period, 11 seconds apart. Selanne's goal was aided by Mikael Granlund picking the puck off the boards (and the referee); Granlund found Selanne down the left side. Selanne, 42, has three goals in his final Olympics and one in his final Olympic game. He has 23 overall. On the next shift, Jokinen beat Quick on a gliding one-timer after some terrible neutral-zone play from the U.S. At 6:24, Patrick Kane nearly beat Rask on his second shootout of the game. He hit the post instead. Oh-for-2. FIRST PERIOD: USA 0, FINLAND 0. So far, it's the Tuukka and Jon Show; the goalies have been outstanding, with Quick getting some help from Ryan Kesler and Ryan McDonagh on a frantic mid-period sequence and Rask stopping Patrick Kane on a penalty shot with about 6 minutes left. Shots after the first 20 minutes were 11-8 in favor of the USA. The period ended on a low note for James van Riemsdyk; the Toronto Maple Leafs winger was hit high with a clear attempt. His mouthguard flew out, and he appeared to be stunned as he skated to the bench. MORE: | | | Video: | | Caleb Swanigan Jersey
