Enroths numbers arent any better he has a .903 overall save percentage and a .917 even-strength save percentagebut there is some temptation to grade the former second-round pick on a curve. Given how terrible the Sabres are this year, thats not an unreasonable a sumption. However, their save charts make for an interesting comparison. How is Lehtonen having a poor year on even-strength save percentage yet isnt below average anywhere, and is actually quite good in some places? The answer is because not all shots are created equal. Dallas has given up a fairly high number of shots in close this season, where shooting percentage is the highest. For example, look at the Wild a team that had ma sive goalie i sues that suddenly has caught fire when they found a guy in Devan Dubnyk who could produce at a league average rate: And then look at the Stars: Note that in this case red stands for above league average and blue means below. That means on the left chart, which is shots taken, red is good. On the right chart, shots against, which were focusing on, red is bad. Basically, the Wild are above average at shotprevention everywhere. Meanwhile, the Stars are the opposite below average everywhere, and especially bad at allowing shots in close. Of course, theyve got nothing on the Sabres: 'Cause the Sabres are beyond awful, you see. Which in some respects bodes well for Enroth hes going to see far le s of every type of shot in Dallas, which can only help. On the other hand, it doesnt nece sarily get to the heart of the Stars problem. Enroth has been roughly as good in close as Lehtonen. And hes been worse from further out: Unle s Enroth has better a rebound control than Lehtonen, this move doesnt seem to solve the fact Dallas doesnt do a good job around the crease. That said, former backup Anders Lindback is terrible. Observe: Every game matters, so not having to play Lindback, or run Lehtonen out there every game, wearing him down, makes the move worthwhile.
