Material composition is one of the primary factors. Outer strands are typically made of high-strength steel, stainless steel, or copper alloys, depending on the application. Stainless steel offers corrosion resistance, which is vital for motorcycles exposed to wet or coastal environments. Strand diameter and count influence flexibility and load-bearing capacity. Finer strands with higher counts create more flexible cables, allowing smoother control for throttle or clutch operation. Thicker or fewer strands provide higher strength but reduce flexibility, making them suitable for heavy-duty or high-tension applications like rear brake cables.

Lubrication and coating also play an important role. Many outer strands are coated with polymer, zinc, or nickel, reducing friction, preventing wear, and improving corrosion resistance. Proper lubrication ensures smooth operation, longer service life, and consistent performance under varying conditions.

Environmental exposure impacts material choice and maintenance. Cables subjected to dirt, moisture, or extreme temperatures require corrosion-resistant materials and protective coatings. In contrast, motorcycles used in controlled or dry environments can use standard steel strands with minimal protective coating.

Installation and tensioning are additional factors affecting performance. Proper routing, secure fastening, and correct tension prevent kinking, premature wear, and loss of responsiveness.
